Thick Vanilla Frosting
1 cup shortening
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
4 tablespoons milk
Beat together shortening and vanilla for 30 seconds medium speed with an electric mixer. Add 2 cups of powdered sugar a bit at a time while beating. Then add 2 tablespoons milk. Slowly add in the rest of the powdered sugar and the rest of the milk until you get the right thickness for your frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting
1 6 ounce package cream cheese
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup butter
4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
Beat together cream cheese, vanilla, and butter until fluffy. Slowly add powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time until the frosting is the right thickness to spread on cake. Keep in the refrigerator until serving.
The "tangy" cream cheese frosting flavor is a real hit on top of all kinds of cakes.
Peanut Butter Frosting
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Heat butter, milk and sugar and boil for 2 minutes. Add peanut butter and vanilla and stir until smooth.

How about a simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting? Here's my recipe:
1 pound confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 tablespoons milk
1. In mixing bowl, beat together sugar, butter, vanilla extract and milk on medium speed until smooth.
2. Add more milk (small drops at a time) if frosting is too thick.
*Note: You can also flavor this with other extracts, such as lemon, almond, etc. instead of vanilla.

Buttercream is good on any kind of cake. Light corn syrup will work fine, as well. I like to put a little vanilla extract in mine.
4 eggs, room temperature*
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
10 ounces butter, cubed and at room temperature
In a large mixing bowl, whip the eggs until light and fluffy.
In a small saucepan bring the sugar and the corn syrup to a boil. Lubricate the inside of a metal baster with a small amount of vegetable oil and dispense it completely. Then use this to drizzle the sugar mixture into the mixing bowl with the eggs. The mixer should be on low speed until you finish drizzling in all of the sugar mixture.
Once the entire mixture of the sugar is incorporated, slowly add the butter pieces. Only add more butter when you can no longer see the previously added pieces. It will go fast at first and then slow down. Continue to whip until the mixture is creamy.

What is in your closet? If you have confectioners sugar, butter, vanilla, and cream or milk ... you will get a nice vanilla frosting and if that is too dull, shake some cinnamon into it ... you could make it with a little evaporated milk rather than cream or a good spoonful of condensed milk and some nutmeg ...be sure to beat it well to get it fluffy ... and you could cut the cake in half horizontally and fill it with jam and then put the halves together and frost it.

I ageee with all of the answers that you have gotten so far, any of them would be good. Personally I love cream cheese frosting + chopped nuts (pecans/ walnuts/ etc) or you could use a different flavoring besides vanilla~rum, almond, etc. You might try mixing in a little jelly. I hope that one of the recipes will work for you!
Happy New Year!!

Well depends on what you want. If you have the ingredients, icing sugar, cocoa powder and butter/margarine, just take 3 cups icing sugar 3/4 cup cocoa, 1/2 cup butter/margerine, and mix it all together with a couple teaspoons HOT water till well mixed. A blender does wonders! Voila, chocolate icing. Or if you want vanilla icing just don't use the cocoa.
