My best friend has MANY cats and wants a dog that acts sort of like one. She really would like a dog but is just branching out. Are there any dogs that act like cats? I've heard that sighthounds, basenjis and shiba inus are very catlike. anything else?

The most cat-like dog that I've learned of from breeders and handlers in the Basenji.
The owners of these websites agree:

SHIBA INU'S! I have one, and yes he's VERY cat like. He LOVES sitting on the back of our sofa too :o) Shiba's clean themselves much like a cat. They're small, like a cat.
They just don't purr
They actually have a different type of bark. More like a yodel. (a throaty type bark) Our first shiba we had, she had the yodel perfect. She was THE best dog! Our male we have now does more of a bark, but he's a barker. Most shiba's aren't though.
They are WONDERFUL dogs but have to be trained from the start. They are smart and need a fenced in yard- or someone that will take them on walks (with a leash) They really are fun dogs! They look a lot like a fox too. Our female we had was a 'red sesame' and we actually had people ask us if she was a fox (like I'd keep a fox of a pet- hello!?!?) but she did look like one. Our male is a cream with red tips and looks a lot like a white fox, but he's bigger and not an small as our female was.
If your friend wants attention when taking him/her for a walk, get a shiba. We ALWAYS have some come up to us and ask or say how cute he is. They are also GREAT watch dogs!!!!!!

Basenji are very high strong dogs and are known to be more independent and Shiba Inu are known to be aggressive. I would suggest getting a shih tzu or a pomerian, or poodle, the small dogs are the more affectionate ones but also if you baby too much can suffer from seperation anxiety. So just be careful

i dont think that Basenji are good with cats because Basenjis are hunting dogs from Africa, and The Shiba is the smallest of the Japanese native breeds of dog and was originally developed for hunting by sight and scent in the dense undergrowth of Japan's mountainous areas. So i dont think that they are good dogs to have around cats.Shih tzu,Pomeranian, and that is just some of the types of dogs that are good around cats and poeple, they are both friendly dogs and active "toy" type of dogs. The reason that the dogs that you gave are not good around cats,is because they are hunting dogs and that is there nature to do that.

for this sudden behavior change, I will be on a urinary tract infection. It's a simple test performed by a Vet. For any pet that has a behavior change there are two possible causes: environmental and medical. If the environment has not changed then it time for a visit to the vet.

Dogs are dogs and cats are cats. If she wants a dog she is going to have to understand that a dog is not a cat.
