I've was diagnosed with bipolar 23 yrs.ago. At first I didn't /could'nt cope. It took a good 10 yrs. of mix and match meds. to find a combo to balance me out. Everyone is different, however. I started out on lithium. I was on that for 7 yrs.
I am currently on , Tegratol,Wellbutrin and Cymbalta. I know that sounds like alot, and it is. But I've been at this along time. I see a psychiatrist and she really knows what shes doing.

People with bipolar should always have a mood stableizer included in there meds. In fact a lot of the time, a mood stab. is all they need. I have major depression also.Tegratol is my mood stab.
I read alot of books! the best book I have found is called, "The survivors book for a bipolar"..its my bible.
I promise you if you are in any mental health therapy group there is other bipolars...that will help you also.
I have always been in individual therapy also.

Had it for 16 years now. Coping was hard from time to time but eventually you learn your cycles. As for meds, don't expect immediate results when some are prescribed to you. It's a hit and miss for that and you may have to try several different kinds before one works for you. Everyone is different. Just be patient and hang in there. Yes, and stay from drugs and alcohol. They'll just make your condition a whole lot worse. Good luck

I've been bipolar for a good 25-30 years, but was only diagnosed a couple of years ago. Before that, I had just been me: wild mood swings, mad periods of productivity, depression, but that was just my character. But the swings got worse and worse, and faster and faster. Eventually there was a total meltdown and a formal diagnosis.

Coping with the diagnosis was hard - it's difficult coming to terms with being labelled mentally ill, but harder was coming to terms with the damage I had done in my life and relationships and the realisation that much of my memory was filtered through some very distorted reality.

I'm on lamotrigine (Lamictal) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) and they work very well for me.
