The first 2 times I left him in his kennel was while I was grocery shopping (about an hour). The 3rd time I left him it was for a few hours. I put his kennel in the living room and turned the tv on for him. His kennel is only big enough for him to turn around in and lie down in. It's not too big. I was always told that dogs will not go to the bathroom in places where they have to lay down in. This is not the case with my puppy. He has pooped in his kennel and walked all around in it and laid down in it. What am I doing wrong?

First, buy a bigger kennel. The reality is that it will happen. Second, don't leave to long. The puppy poops a lot, and whether you like it or not, he'll do it. Give him rewards for going outside and scold him for doing it inside. So basically, realize that for the time being it will happen, but verbally scold him when it happens. When he does it right give him a dog treat or soemthing. He'll catch on that going outside is what you want and he'll just start doing it. Bladder control for puppies comes with time, and right now it's just an awkwardstage for him. Also, every time you leave make sure he goes. If he hasn't pooped directly before you leave, it'll happen 100% of the time.

puppies have to adapt to any environment. was this his first couple of times? you need to make it "his space" so that he doesn't poop. Stick some toys and one of your shirts that smell like you in the kennel with him. Have him go into the kennel when you are home. I have huge cages for my dogs. My german shepard can stand and turn around but curls up into a ball to go to sleep. My dog even has a furry pillow in his kennel.
good luck.

If he's really young, he just can't control himself. Before putting him in his crate, be sure to take him out and keep him out until he goes potty, then crate him.

The size of the crate is fine, by the way.

Have you taken him outside first and stayed until he did all of his business?
