Being a full-time teacher, mother & wife, it's not always easy to prepare meals @ home. Every so often, I end up eating at fast food restaurants-- What are some of the healthier options @ fast food restaurants such as KFC, McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Wendy's, etc??

I am trying to lose a few pounds this year and I don't want to end up picking the foods w/ the most calories.

Grilled chicken is always healthier than fried. I work at Jack in the Box, and we have salads that are made fresh daily (they are kinda big though, most people can't eat a whole one in one setting). We also have grilled chicken sandwiches, on sourdough or ciabatta bread, or you can substitute a regular bun. JIB, Wendy's, and McD's all have fruit salads as well. Pitas (our Chicken fajita pita or Southwest Pita are examples) are also healthier. Stay away from deep fried foods like fries or fish. If you have a particular restaurant you really enjoy, check out their Nutrition Guides (most stores have them, and if they dont' in the store, they are available online). Subway sandwiches (or Sbarro or Quiznos) are also healthy alternatives to faster food (though a tad more pricey). Soups are another alternative, and more fast food places are carrying them. Chili is a similar option. Heck, you can heat a can of campbell's before you go to work, dump it in a thermos, and it should be hot by lunchtime! My husband has a thermos he can plug in to keep it at a certain temperature. Check out the websites for nutrition, and use your imagination!

Also, if you're going the Atkins route, most stores will put the meat in a special container for you, so you don't need a bun. They'll also throw in a knife and a fork.

Skip the "fried", mayo, and cheese and you have a head start right there.

Here are my ideas for you
KFC- eek what are you thinking :) You can't go in there.
McD's- Garden salad, mandarin chicken salad, (dont eat the crunchy things or the cream dressings) or Chicken McGrill-no mayo, no fries
Taco Bell- order anything fresco (means no cheese) and no sourcream.Chicken burritos are not bad and filling.
Pizza Hut.- another eek. have 2 slices veggie thin at most.
Wendys- Chili and baked potato plain. Stay away from the chicken nuggets, fries and frosty. The plain hamburger is actually not bad- order the junior.

I actually have an allergic type reaction to too much fat or sugar and these are what I order. It can be hard for some people to adapt (people always look at me funny when I eat salads with no dressing,) but it become a lifestyle. Don't be afraid to say NO MAYO - and send it back when it comes out with mayo on it. I do! Good luck to you!

McDonald's Fruit and Walnut Salad.... yummy

Wendy's Chili, also the yogurt with granola, or mandarin orange cup....

Salads from anywhere...

According to the South Beach Diet, McDonalds Egg McMuffin isn't too bad...

If you do get a sandwich, throwing away the top bun makes a HUGE difference in the fat and calories.

Subway is the best place to eat when on a diet...

There arent any healthy fast food restaurants! Unless you go there and order vege burgers but then you see, they deep fry those. Best to stay away from all these places and prepare something healthy yourself at home the night before. You will shed any christmas pounds in no time atall.

Truthfully, not eating at fast food resturaunts is healthier, your better off. Today in the fast food society evertyhting is PROCESSED, even if its a salad or grilled chicken sandwich. But knowing me I Iove Mc Donalds and I am pretty sure you do too but, I guess you just have to take the risk of not eating healthy at fast food resturaunts.

There really is no real way to lose weight by eating at these places, but if you must... salads, grilled chicken, fuit and yogurt cups, single cheeseburger, cut out all french fries, plain cheese pizza, and all in proportion!!!!

If they have salads, that is a good alternative to a lot of fried, greasy food.

Subway is great - you have to tell them NO mayonaise and the fat content is good on most subs. Whole wheat bread also is yummy.
