Our dog is litter trained, but will still go to his "spot" in the yard when we have him outside.
Purina makes SecondNature dog litter, which is what we use. They have lots of helpful information at www.doglitter.com
We tried to paper train our Chihuahua at 14 weeks, but all he did was shred the newspapers and potty pads. After 2-3 weeks of this we saw some dog litter at the pet store where we buy most of our supplies. We thought it was worth trying. And we are ever so glad we did. It took Stanly a little over a day (about 28 hours) to litter train, he was completely accident-free within a week.

Georgia B has the best answer! But what I havnt seen is the dangers of regular cat litter. Some dogs will eat it. If you have the clumping kind it will get into their intestines and clump resulting in a ER visit ir death. The non clumping kind isnt good to eat either. I used Second Nature. I have hairless dogs and during inclement weather I put the dog litter out for them. Otherwise I take them outside. And yes they can be trained for both. They will first go to where the litter is and if it not there they head to the back door to be let out.

my breeder has a litter pan in the dog pen when they're little. She starts with commercial litter mixed with shredded paper and then uses shredded paper alone to save money. The dogs just naturally go there--if they "miss" you can scoop the poop into the litter and the smell will attract them.
Her outside kennel dogs each have a little igloo and they have pans of litter in the igloos. It's a hoot they will run inside the igloo when they have to go and the kennels are spotless. It's a little harder with indoor dogs that you want to be both outside and litter trained--if you leave them inside an ex-pen all day they can be trained to go to the litter and then when you're home you can just take them out to the same spot as much as you think they need to go. All puppies have indoor accidents anyway so it doesn't seem to be any more frequent.

Litter isn't usually used with dogs but you can paper train a dog to go on newspapers. The petstores also sell plastic backed sheets to use for paper trained dogs. Easy clean up!

You need to take the puppy out 20 to 30 min after eating. You can also put puppy pads in a restroom and when they eat put them there. Then in the morning take the puppy out first thing and that will teach them touse it in the morning outside and hold it until you put them in the designated area to use the potty. Be consistent.
