That would depend on how purple you want the ends of your hair to be. A tint of purple, as long as you have medium brown hair to blond, would mean you wouldn't have to bleach your hair first, but if you want really bold purple or you have really dark hair, you will need to bleach the ends of your hair first. Buy a bleach kit, I would try a Sally's Beauty Supply if you have one in your area (under $10 is normal), and then bleach the ends of your hair, however far up the hair you want the purple to go. Then, after you bleach the hair and wash the bleach out, buy whatever color of purple hair dye you want (hot topic, sally beauty supply, maybe a drug store, or though a internet distributor), and follow the instructions to dye over the bleached hair. I would actually dye more hair than you bleached so you don't accidentally leave a bleached spot with no color. Feel free to email me for more information, or check out Craftster.org and find the hair section.

Are you dying the tips or underneath? If tips:
Cover your upper body in a plastic garbage bag, by cutting a hole for your head, and pulling it over you. Mix up the dye, then just apply it to the ends, and proceed as if you were dyeing normally.
If you're doing the whole underneath of your hair, then just put up the top of your hair into a bun/pin up, then proceed!
It's easier if you have long hair, or have a friend to do it for you, but it shouldn't be too hard.
Hope this helps.

Are you a brunette? If so, then you first have to bleach the area that you want to be purple. Manic Panic has a great bleach that will get most of your natural colour out.
From there, you'd buy the colour that you want and apply it to the bleached area. The lighter you were able to get the bleached area, the better and brighter the purple will look.
If you simply apply the purple to your hair without bleaching first, then you will get a purple tint to your hair. The lighter your hair is, the brighter the purple will be.

do you just want to dye the bottom of your hair purple? i mean the lowest part of your hair not the under layer of your hair?
whichever, if your hair is dark, highlight the area that you want to change, then just add the colour you want to that area
good luck!

I don't know how this is professionally done, but what about taping the section of hair you want dyed, a few inches above the ends of your hair?
