As a spectacle wearer myself, when sparring I am more worried than average about my eyes/ specks how has anyone else overcome this problem. Bar not letting the opponent hit you of course, its normally their lack of skill that means contact is made. I'm short/ near sighted and a Karate do

I wear glasses but take them off when sparring. I'm near sighted also and my partners look blurry but it does not bother me I got use to it. I tried contacts but didn't like them and I'm too cheap for Lasik.

Here are your options:

1. Wear headgear with a facemask like: http://www.onlinesports.com/pages/I,CEN-11451C.html

2. Wear contact lenses.

3. Get Lasik surgery to correct you vision.

4. Just go without your glasses and get used to sparring with blurry vision. I go this route because in a real life situation this is probably what will happen. You get hit and your glasses fly off or you take it off prior to engaging in combat.

I'm quite short-sighted, and nowadays wear glasses most of the time, but I wear contact lenses for training (previously Wing Chun among others, currently Krav Maga). Of course, the other replies are quite correct, if it came to a real fight, the chances are the first thing to go would be my glasses, and I would have to cope with that. But I don't favour TRAINING without them - not for my sake, but for my opponents! With both Wing Chun and Krav Maga, I really don't like to think that my lack of (eye)focus would mean I couldn't judge distance correctly, which could easily result in injury to your sparring partner. The only slight snag - or advantage! with using contacts for Krav Maga is that I have to ask my sparring partners to go easy on the eye gouges.....

I too wear glasses, but during sparring wear contacts and headgear. I don't like the contacts, but I can endure them for sparring and actual fights. By the way, when working on your ground game there are prescription goggles available. Good Luck. Go Matt Hughes!

My daughter and I train in full contact taekwondo (WTF). When training I don't wear glasses at all, but my daughter does. When sparring she takes her glasses off. We both have slightly blurred vision but you learn to adapt. Very few techniques reqiure pin-point accuracy, and lets face it, in competition or real-life your opponent is going to move anyway so accuracy to that level is almost impossible. I suppose it will depend on how badly your vision is affected, but would agree with other answers - train as though you are in a real "situation" where possible. Good Luck!

When I asked this in karate class about 15 years ago, the best answer I got was, 'If you are ever in a fight, what will happen to your glasses? Better learn to fight without them!"

Could you consider contact lenses? most people can wear them these days. They are very comfortable. Johnsons acuvue oaysis are very good, also daily lenses may be handy just for sport.
