newspaper at the kitchen table. I didn't do a thing to my neck and suddenly it was in terrible pain. That was 6 hours ago and I still need a heated neck thing on it although the pain is now tolerable.

My doctor told me I had phlebitis, an inflammation of the neck muscle. I can just be turning my neck and it comes on and is sore and stiff for days. I had to take a strong muscle relaxant with codeine to help with the pain and stiffness. I am not bothered by this anymore but for years I had to be really careful on how I turned my neck. Talk to your doctor as there may be new and better treatments. I had this in my 20's and 30's and am now in my 50's.

dont use heat! take it off & use ice instead!!!

ok, now, it's possible that you had any number of things going on in your neck that started this... sitting w/ your head bent forward or down for a while merely triggered it (straw that broke the camel's back...)

don't use heat today, use ice only, the reason you feel worse is that the heat is causing some inflammation in an area that was already irritated... it may help the muscles relax or feel good while it's on, but it will make it much worse.
use ice for 15 min or so every hour if you can tonight... it will decrease the pain & any inflammation.

Simply sneezing can cause a ruptured disc or muscle strain in your neck or your back. If alternating heat & ice every 20 minutes doesn't help, you can try ibuprofen until you are able to see your doctor. Ibuprofen will help not only with the pain, but the inflammation as well.

How did you sleep last night? Did you happen to have blankets or a pillow under your neck or slept a way that gave your neck a unnatural position?

This can hurt for days! Think about how you are sleeping then maybe you will feel better? Good luck!

If you were looking down for a while that might be the cause and looking up or in a different direction could cause major pain. Even if it was a long time ago it still could hurt, just relax.
