Watch your caloric intake. It takes 3500 calories to burn a pound of weight. (or to add a pound). Try to get a rough idea of how many calories you take in a day now and reduce it by a couple hundred. There are plenty of books out there that have caloric values for all foods and you can read labels on others. Exercise is good too. The more muscle you have the faster you will lose. Muscle burns more calories than fat. BUT, beware, muscle weighs more than fat also. As you build muscle, you may actually see a weight gain for a short time. You may notice you drop 4 pants sizes but only lost 10 lbs. This is due to increased muscle which will eventually burn them calories faaster.

Calculate your caloric need and subtract 15-20%, to get to your target caloric intake for healthy weight loss.

Divide this amount by 7 and eat 7 meals a day.

Eat only essential fatty acids (in other words, go low fat!), and complex carbs with low glycaemic index.

Calculate your protein intake needs here:
http://www.healthcalculators.org/calculators/protein.asp

Avoid alcohol and sugar (use sweeteners and sweetened drink like diet coke and the like EXCEPT right after workouts).

Drink at least 3 liters (3/4 gallon) of water: you're a man, overweight and exercising so chances are you will need even more. However don't go below this amount. You need water to burn fat and you need water to put on muscle. Plus it takes the post-workout soreness away.

Eat/drink at least 3 servings of low fat milk, low fat yogurt and the like: calcium helps burning fat TWICE as fast.

Once you've changed your diet this way, remember to eat more carbs (NOT more calories!!!) the day before the running. Also remember NOT to work out with weights everyday! You need rest and sleep for the exercise to be effective, so either workout every other day OR isolate muscles and *rotate* the training (one day the core, one the upper body, one the lower, and then repeat the cycle).

Good luck!
