My boyfriend and me are going to Scotland at the end of Jan and we'll be staying near Gretna. We've been joking that we'll come back married and we've always said we'd elope. I've been looking for info on Gretna Green but it doesn't seem to be as exciting or spontaneous as I've always thought it was supposed to be. We thought we could just turn up, drag our witnesses off the street and get wed. Has anybody eloped to Gretna before or know anything about it?

We want it to be between us and we have never wanted the big ceremony. For us, eloping somewhere and having OUR wedding to OURSELVES is what we want. I'm asking for help and advice, not judgement from people with different views. I have looked for info and it seems there is just as much planning needed as if we were planning a big ceremony. It's not even decided that we will get wed but we want to make sure we have done everything we're supposed to do.

I think a lot of the legal stuff can be done online, and it's not really hard to get that part done, but you can't just decide to get married one morning and turn up in your jeans, as it is a really busy place and more than likely fully booked, give them a call and ask what your options are, I cannot blame you for wanting to elope, as soon as a marriage is announced everyone wants to get in on the plans, and it ends up being more a day for everyone else to enjoy ( and then talk about behind your back) and just stressful for the bride and groom.

Hi, I looked into gretna for my son and girlfriend as her parents were dead against them being together and your right, there is just as much planning and cost involved. If you both are serious about having just the two of you at your celebration, why dont you do what my son and his girlfriend did, they booked a holiday in jamaica, and came back married. they made out they were just going away for a break, it also cost a lot less than it would of at gretna.

Good luck to the both of you and i hope that you both have a very happy life together

Why on earth do people think that you can just go to Gretna Green and get married there on the spot? A marriage is a serious legal contract and everything has to be in place before the ceremony can take place. I have never been there but i believe the registry office there is just an ordinary sort of place. You can probably find pics of it on the net. Why not plan your wedding properly and create a day to remember? In later years you will be glad you did! I got married the first time without much ceremony and its not that great or romantic.

My friend got married here last summer. It's just on the border. It was really beautiful. They got married over an anvil in the stables, piper pipes you in etc.

Only downside is that it is a bit of a production line, bride after bride. Bit like Las Vegas - everyone was in a wedding dress. I think you'll need to sort the wedding licences out too before you set off. Good luck.

I have been to Gretna Green and it is a wonderful place and you do not need the usual stuff.

You can book it all online, but the actual place in grim. If you've got visions of rolling hills and a blacksmith, forget it. It's a nasty little town hall on the edge of a council estate in a built up part of town. Try and drag witnesses off the street and you'll end up with broken teeth. It's more like Glasgow really.
