I have a poodle/shitzu mix. His eyes run and get "gunky". What is the best way to clean his eyes? Thanks. ~Kelly~

If you're just worried about the gunk and not tear stains (which aren't harmful but merely cosmetically objectionable and only show up on light colored dogs) use a few drops of a no-tears baby shampoo in a cup of warm water and clean it gently with a washcloth a couple of times a day.

Next time you take him to the vets, tell him about it and ask him to check if the dog has a problem with it's eyelashes. Some dogs with gunky eyes have eyelids and lashes which roll inward and irritate the eye and if this is the case it needs to be "tacked" to prevent injuring the eye. Tacking is a pretty minor surgery that keeps the eyelid from rolling in and the hairs from irritating the eye.

Clean them every day with a solution that your vet can give you. Over the counter products don't seem to such a good job. Over time, the stained hairs will grow out but you have to keep at it. The dog will fuss in the beginning but if you associate this to something good like a reward at the end the dog will get used it and let you do what ever you want. I can examine any part of my dog because I've been touching them everyday, things like squeezing a paw, lifting a leg, looking at teeth and the like. Good luck Kelly!

I have a Bichonpoo (Bichon Frise & Poodle) with the same problem. I bought Eye Wipes from Petedge.com that work great. They are like handiwipes you just wipe the eyes with them.

Hot water and a rag . Also get some cotton balls. They also sell stuff at petco for that stuff.
