As much as I hate to say it, it is wrong to watch movies but it definitely won't send you to Hell. Not being saved and having Jesus Christ as your only Lord and Saviour will send you to Hell. It is wise to steer away from evil inventions. The Bible states that in Romans1:30 ...inventors of evil things... Just remember that sinning won't send you to Hell not knowing Jesus will. God Bless.

There is a long history of self-censorship in Christianity. The Catholic church maintained an index of forbidden books for centuries. When movies came out, the church developed a rating system that was the ancestor of the MPAA rating system every theater uses today. But they were just the most organized. Now and then you hear about book or album burnings at some church to condemn an author or musician.

The understanding is that there are diabolical ideas out there that can ruin your faith. Some people personalize it and say the devil is seeking an opportunity to get into your mind. What's really happening is that people of simple, unexamined faith may get exposed to ideas they weren't expecting. Some may shock their naive belief system, even damage it. There are two possible responses, censor the material or develop the tools to deal with the challenges.

Truly innocent people, such as children, who are not ready for "adulterating" material should probably be shielded to some extent. But at some point, adulthood suggests the need for self-discernment. The ideas are out there, you should know about them. The more you know, the better you can handle a different belief system without spiritually collapsing. You don't have to become an authority on everything but you should at least be generally aware of how "other" people think.

Of course this applies mostly to intellectual arguments. Horror movies are more gut-level events. Horror movies are fun because you get all worked up, see terrible things happening, but then you always survive. If it caused you to start seeing demonic forces all around you, or provoked a desire to see blood and gore in real life, that would not be so good. But if you can tell the difference between real life and Hollywood fantasy, if you can say "It's only a movie," you shouldn't have any problem. People slug baseballs or shoot bad guys in video games but that doesn't make them killers in real life. You decide if you can handle it.

Well, seeing that you only asked Christians to respond, I guess I'll give it a try.
Jesus said that the basis of all commandments were; 1) to love God with all your heart soul and mind, and 2) to love our neighbor like we love ourselves. So anything you do has to be filtered through these questions; Can I do this and still love God? And, Will this interfere with me loving my neighbor?
To correctly answer these questions you have to know how God defines love, so I would get a concordance and look up the word love to see what God says it is. Then, I would look at the movies, in the light of God's Word to determine if they're OK to watch.

In the event you just want the short answer, I'll tell you why some Christians don't think its a good idea to watch horror movies. Its not because they're scared of them. It's because the things you look at or listen to eventually alter your way of thinking and cause you to accept what you initially wouldn't. This is why throughout the Bible, God says to meditate on His Word day and night. In the case of horror movies, its obvious that they originate with Satan, who 1) is the enemy of God, and 2) wants to do everything he can to turn people away from God and kill them. The Bible says that a double-minded man is unstable, so you really can't have it both ways. If you really loved God, you wouldn't even consider being entertained by His enemy.

So, there you are. I still would suggest you getting the concordance and looking up love, because as you read the diferent passages, you'll hear God speaking directly to you. You'll see things that you never saw before and He'll answer other questions you may have.

A story I heard (don't know the source - and I'm paraphrasing based on my memory, but I hope you'll get the point): An Indian grandfather and grandson were talking one day. The grandfather explained that inside every man there are two wolves who are in constant battle. One is very evil and is full of anger, fear, destruction, jealously, and spirit of death. The other wolf is very good and is full of love, happiness, joy, peace and patience.

The young grandson said, "Grandpa, which wolf wins?" The grandfather looked down and gently told the young man, "the one you feed the most."

Which wolf do you feed the most?

Once you accept Christ as Savior, there is nothing you can do to lose your salvation. Your salvation depends on who and what Christ is. You have eternal security. If you believe that you have sinned use 1John1:9" If we name our sins he is just and righteouss to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".Your sin nature will be with you always. God has found a way to resolve the problem. Use 1John1:9 and keep moving. Relax, be happy. What Christians need to do is study the Bible, Pray and partake of the Sacrament. Peace out.

First of all I want to say that I am christan and understand your question. Now, remember as christian we are free to choose, but not everything benfits us. Now I would not be scaried that god will send you to hell if you watch scary movies , it's actually for your benfit. Hey if after a scary movie you can't sleep. it's not good for you to watch. I recommend that you pray ask God to reveal it to you. And remember the best answer is better from him that anyone else.

Sure you can, you have freewill, but the question is should you own/watch them if you truly follow Jesus, & the answer is no. The light has nothing to do with the darkness, you can't be unequally yolked, you either sit at the table (spiritually speaking)with God or with the demons ,but can't be with both & anything evil, scary God doesn't promote, however this is your choice, but I'd give them up & repent to God. God's children are not the worlds children, for the worlds children belongs to the Devil.

I'm sure you can, but how will that help you grow spiritually? The Bible says that although everything is allowed, not everything is beneficial. The reason why you're questioning yourself is that the Holy Spirit is nudging you to make better use of the time He gives you.God has a purpose for you.... how do scary movies contribute to your carrying that purpose out?

I dont think Jesus would carry the weight of the world and die for you to Redeem you, but be utterly vengeful that you watch a scary movie. But in Paul's letter to the Romans we read, "One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the LOrd and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living....... But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean." Romans chapter 14

Now of course they did not have movies back then, but if you make a parallel, to some watching certain kinds of movies (or all movies) might be sinful or taking your focus of God, and to another it does not harm their faith. Although watching movies may not be a sin, if to you, you feel it could provide a distraction or make you fall into sin, then for you, you should uphold your decision and not watch scary movies. Although they may not be sinful, if in your heart you feel like you are doing something wrong, then in a way you a betraying the Lord. Its not that by watching scary movies you are doing something he doesn't want, but to the contrary, you are doing something that YOU do not feel is right. For that reason, if you feel something is wrong, then you are justified in avoiding it. But if you can overcome your thoughts and realize it is not sinful or dangerous to watch such movies, then you should be free to do so. Just be true to your heart, and if something seems wrong - don't do it.
