I say Comedy, because everyone likes to laugh.

I am with you. comedy is the way to go. stay away from anything political or gory, you probably don't know her that well yet, and honestly..not romantic at all.

Sometimes more raunchy comedies embarrass me to see on a date. Like Anchorman or Borat or something like that I would never see in a first date. A Sandler type comedy is borderline. Action or drama are good because they are nice to watch and not too embarrassing, and less raunchy comedy is good too. Sometimes horror is ok but that too can get embarrassing in certain parts, heh.

I say that no movie is a good idea for a first date.
A first date is for sharing company, conversation and discovering about each other. The energy between two and how you relate.
When watching a movie, two are not facing each other, not talking, not interacting.
I feel a movie for a first date is for a shy person who does not feel confident about relating. It's something to hide behind.
Yes, a movie can spark a topic for having something to talk about after the movie. Does the guy need a movie to spark conversation ? If so, than the man who took me to a movie for a first date is not the man for me.

Its a bad idea to go to a movie on first date. First dates are meant start getting to know one another. How do you find out whether you want to have a second date with this person by going to a movie?

A comedy.
The last couple of boyfriends I`ve had, we saw a comedy as our first date. With horrors you don`t know how they`ll react, with romance movies you might be bored out of your mind. Comedy.
