If you are wanting to change out the whole rear end, housing and all, then to be an EXACT replacement, the 8 cylinder Mustang, '65 and '66 only. However, if you just want to replace axle shafts and use your old housing then you can use axles from a Falcon ('65), Comet ('65), and Mustang ('65 and '66). However, these MUST all be V8 cars. And as you can already see, the pickings are slim to none at best. So as edselman suggested, get an old 9'' out of a big Ford and have it narrowed. This was EXTREMELY common thing done back in the day. Expecially with drag racers. Get an old 9'' from a '72 back LTD, Galaxie, etc. and take it to a machine shop and have the axles and housing cut down to the measurements of your Mustang. But it MUST be 1972 or older - the '73 full size had a different lug bolt pattern. If you are wanting to keep the drum brakes for the front, you are a little better off for interchange there. Not much, but a little. 1965 thru 1968 cars such as the Falcon, Mustang and Fairlane used the 10'' brakes. However, yours is probably the 10'' X 2 1/4, and some of these cars used the 2 1/4'' wide shoes, and some used the 2 1/2'' wide shoes. So if you wanted to keep your drum brakes, but go to the wider width brake shoes, then you would need to rob the spindles off these cars as well. If you are wanting to change to a front disc brake setup, then you would need the Maverick/Granada disc brake stuff along with the outer tie rod ends, etc. So the bottom line is that you need to find a salvage yard that handles the older stuff in your area and get aquainted with the owner. You will probably be on a first name basis with him by the time you are done!

A specialty store for Mustang parts is the best place to find all the parts you need to restore the Mustang.

I've got a book on donor cars that use the same parts. If you can't find what you want contact me and I'll dig it out.
