Euglena is problematic. Some Euglenas are photosynthetic: others are not. All are single-celled. Thus, they are both algae and protists. The terms "protist" and "alga," however, are becoming taxonomically meaningless.

Protists are so heterogeneous that they are no longer classified as a single kingdom by up-to-date taxonomists. In this new taxonomy, the Protists have been spit up into 7 or so Kingdoms, and the Euglenozoa have been elevated to a new Kingdom.

Euglena is a Protist. Euglena is a genus of microscopic, one-celled organisms in the Protista kingdom.

Euglena is definitely a protist! See the following sites:

http://www.jracademy.com/~mlechner/archive1999/euglena.html

http://www.fcps.edu/StratfordLandingES/Ecology/mpages/euglena.htm

The last site is good because it explains that assignment of kingdom is difficult for these types of plant-yet-animal-like organisms.
