First, you cannot have a Relationship with GOD, unless it is by Jesus Christ and His Finished Work! Belief according to the Scriptures [John 7:38-39]

RELIGION is = Not Knowing God!

A Denomination = is Not Knowing God!

Perhaps if you will look read through the Gospel of John and see what relationship that Jesus had with His Father, GOD?

Thanks RR

P.S. See 1Samuel 3:21 & Romans 10:17

Close and good relationships are best achieved when there is open and honest communication between (in this case) two parties. You do that through prayer and study of His Word; He provides the Spirit to help you understand. Some doubt the validity of the bible but I believe that God who has the ability to create also has the power to preserve His message to us. When you come into agreement with God, believe the message of His Son, and trust Him in all He says about faith, repentence, and baptism, you will enter into a covenant relationship with God. You are never His puppet; you will always have choices to make. It is the trust that you have in Him that because He made you, us, that He can help us make the best choices in our lives so that we may have peace, joy, and a willingness to share our blessings and talents with others.

We should always be conscious to the fact that our life is meant to be used in great and powerful ways by God Almighty. We are the vessel in which God can work through to touch others and minister His Word of encouragement that all will be well. To be used of God, we must be available to the Holy Spirit and be sensitive to the still small voice of His leading. The Lord can do extraordinary things through each of our lives if we only surrender our will and allow the Lord to work through us. Be encouraged to be the vessel in which the Lord can work through to minister His grace and encouragement towards all those in need. (Ephesians 4:29-32) (Isaiah 30:21)
2 Corinthians 4:6-7 "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

John's gospel and letters provide a lot of insight into this question. If you're really serious about seeking an answer to your inquiry (which is excellent) then take the time to read carefully through the books in their entirety. Be very encouraged, your question says you're already on the right track.

"Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:12-13)

"Jesus answered him, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him...'" (John 14:23)

Starts with honesty and truth.

Unfortunately, most churches and unrealistic dogma and theology nowadays draw you further away from the God they claim to worship.

Seek Christ yourself in the quiet of your room or in nature. If there is a God, he will respond to those who seek him.

Speak to Him and tell Him you want a close relationship with Him. He'll do His part.

Please be careful about asking that here. You are going to get some nasty comments form non-believers... I hope I'm wrong!
With that said, go talk to different pastors, priests, and other leaders to find which "religion" best fits what you believe.
Talk to GOD, just talk to HIM, HE will hear you.
It doesn't have to be fancy, or anything special...
Then express your desire to know more. HE will come through for you, if you truly want him to.
GOD Bless!

Surrender your life to Christ; accept Him as your Lord and Savior. Confess your sins to Him and ask Christ to come into your heart and change your life. If you are true and sincere, He will do so - :)

Here are some verses for you in reference to your inquiry: 1 John chapter 5; Romans 10:9, 10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 - for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 1 John 1:7-10 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 - IF we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 - If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 2:4-6 - He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him 5 - But whoso keepth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk even as he walked. John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life;: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
May God bless. Happy New Year.

The best way is to do things for God. As you do things for Him, you learn of and from Him.
