You should be able to use your hand again after 24 hours to a certain degree as long as you keep the dressing and wound dry. However it is likely to be around 10 days before the stitches come out and it may also be this long before the large dressing can also be removed. Your hand may be sore for a little longer than 10 days but as others have suggested it is really important to start exercising your hand as soon as possible to prevent long term damage to the muscles and tendons in your hand. As someone has suggested one of the best exercises to do is to squeeze a ball in the palm if the hand such as a tennis or rubber ball.

Ive had both my hands done, not at the same time, and the last op took just 6 minutes. I drove home on both occasions and as I live with my 21 year old son who depends on me to be a mother and father I was using my hands the next day. It took a bit of care though so as not to get it wet or to knock it.

You do not lose use of the arm, its very sore afterwards and should be rested for a day or two.
The operation does not always work, my husband has had it done 3 times now on the same hand.

It is not long and indeed it is important to start exercising straight away. Try squeezing a ball gently.
