What to make your own sauce - you need a tomato base. Try this base to get you started. This recipe will give you a good, thick tomato sauce that you can then add the flavour you want.
INGREDIENTS:
You can use 16 ounces tomato sauce ( i use squashed tomatos, with sugar and GM free tomatoe paste).
1 small onion
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco
1/2 teaspoon salt
PREPARATION:
Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil in a saucepan. Cook until transparent. Add lemon juice, salt and pepper, paprika, mustard, and Tabasco. Mix well. Simmer over medium heat for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add tomato sauce and vinegar.
Let simmer for an additional 15 minutes. From here you can add whatever flavour you want. Brown sugar, honey or molasses for a sweet sauce. Chilies and cayenne for a hot sauce. Really, whatever you like.

I love making homemade barbecue sauces and experimenting with various flavorings. I think this one is great for pork because of the apple flavoring.
1/2 cup tomato paste
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple juice
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1. Place all ingredients into a saucepan, stir and bring to a boil.
2. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring often to avoid burning.
3. Remove from heat, let cool for 10-15 minutes and baste pork.

You can buy some really good barbeque sauce from most supermarkets. I can recommend nando's peri peri barbeque sauce. It is devine and goes perfectly with all meats. It takes very little time, is relatively inexpensive, stores well and tastes out of this world. Just because you did not make it yourself does not mean it aint good. Nigella likes it.
Happy cooking
