The Dark Ages occured after a period of Opressive rule by the corrupt elite Religious Monarchies of Europe (1% of the total population) that sucked the life out of their subjects, putting people to death for unfounded reasons, causing famine, denying education and opressing millions. By the time the Dark Ages arrived most in Western Civilization had evolved to look elsewhere for answers from the divine. The experience from the recent predicessors set the mood as the religious, the Christian Monarchy were just as, and more so, barbaric.

You will find in even modern times, generally, Europeans aren't THAT religious.

You have periods of history where the religious prove themselves to be zealots and a total danger of humanity, then that cycles out and people forget, new faith found. And the revolution continues...

They had freewill, but back then people were filled with silly superstitions and ideas that clouded reason and common sense. Nobody seemed interested in questioning anything, and if they did, they were killed because of "heresy," even if what they were questioning had nothing to do with religion.
