Sodium as you know is found in common salt. Sodium is good for in the right amounts, without you will not function but excess is bad for.

It is needed primarily to maintain the right concentration (or osmolarity) in the blood so thing can get in and out of cells efficiently and for nerves to function. Without it, you would not be able to absorb glucose either (you absorb glucose through a Sodium-Glucose symport transporter in cells called Glut), and gradually you will run out of energy.

Too much, and you will disrupt your water balance, potentially destroy red blood cells and cause Kidney problems. Nerves would be affected too.

The general rule is everything is good for you in the right amounts. It even applies to Vitamins as some of them in excess as can be fatal.

As everything, it depends on the quantity. The adequate amount of sodium (which is one of the contituents of salt) that you need to consume is about 1500 mg per day (people over 50 need less sodium), and since salt is added to everything, you don't need to worry about a deficiency.

Now, the answer to your question, technically, yes, in fact it's essential for many reactions in the human body.

Yes, but ONLY if taken with equal amounts of potassium. THe two balance each other out. What is commonly reffered to as potassium deficiency is actually sodium poisoning. It's an essencial nutrient found in salt, but no supplements should be taken.
