i'm trying to convince my sister to get a sable one. its markings are like this http://www.hornescockerspaniels.com/files/black_tipped_sable.jpg
as a puppy. so i guess it will look pretty closely like the dog in the link. and i know the coloring of the dog doesnt matter but it'd be nice to get a dog with coloring that i like

SInce we own 3 cocker spaniels I suppose I am probably a little bit partial. We have one that is chocolate, one black and white, and one buff. I think the sables are beautiful dogs. They are different than many people are used to and so some think that they aren't too cute. I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I think the chances of health problems with a puppy from a breeder who produces puppies that don't fit the breed standard is much higher than from a reputable breeder who is trying to produce a better cocker.
The sable pattern can often look dirty and / or blotchy when trimmed - or you can end up with a fawn dog with sooty ears.
Cockers come in far nicer colours & you can certainly find a better quality puppy than the poorly bred one in your link.
If the puppy you have in mind is a discard from a show bred litter where parents have proper health clearances it should make a nice pet but it is still up to your sister.
Never buy a puppy from a pet store as it would be from a puppy mill or uncaring breeder.
If you purchase a puppy it should be from a reputable breeder or adopt one from a rescue group. Please don't fund the puppy mills.
When you get your own dog you can call the shots :o)
