It is definitely a great idea to donate to Locks of Love. I've done it twice, and each time I've had a great experience with the salons I went to and such.
You need at least 10 in of hair for each layer. The Locks of Love website requires that you separate each layer and cut it separately. (see source)
Many salons cut your hair for free and send it in for you as well. (Great Clips is a participating salon) I think the salons will style your hair for you for free as well.
Good Luck!

Donating to Locks of Love is an awesome idea! You need at least 10 inches of hair to donate. You can look online for the address to send your hair in yourself, or most salons will send it in for you if you tell them that is what you want. Layers should be fine also.

I have heard good and bad things about Locks of Love.
You need 10-12 inches to donate in good condition.
You don't need to go anywhere to get it cut, you can just send in the ponytail, but there are places that will give you a free haircut when you donate, so look in your area.
I think there can be layers in the hair as long as the main lenght meets the requirements.
I have heard that a better alternative is to contact the cancer society directly because they do something similar.

I think it's an AWESOME idea.. You need at least 10 inches. If you don't have that much to donate, I hear Pantene Beautiful Lengths requires less. I think you can get it cut at your salon, then you get a special package to send it in. I'm not sure about the layers, but I don't see why there couldn't be. Hope this helps

Personally, I think it's a fantastic idea and very generous of you. What a great way to start out the new year: helping another and revealing a new you!

I think that's it's a very good cause and a nice thing of you to do. However I've heard from many ladies that they do not actually use most of the hair they get. So chances are your good deed might go to waste. They claim that most American hair is not suitable for wigs and that is why they do not use it. Also they sell the wigs ( very expensive) rather than giving them away. Anything that's nice of you to do.
