The last MS update was in early December and included 6 or 7 security-related items. Within a day my Dell Dimension 4300 running WinXP Home would not stay in hibernation. It goes through the usual steps going into hibernate, then after 5-8 minutes it boots up without leaving anything significant in the log files.

Take a look at your power settings and the BIOS. See what you have for "Wake-up on". Some sort of activity may be waking it.
