What is the Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Assistance Program?

On February 18, 2009, full power television stations will stop analog broadcasting and transition to digital broadcasting. Households that do not subscribe to cable or satellite services will need either a television set capable of receiving DTV programming, or a digital-to-analog converter box. Digital-to-analog converter boxes will make DTV signals viewable on analog TV sets. These converter boxes will be available in retail stores during the transition. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce is developing rules that will allow households to obtain coupons that can be applied toward the purchase of digital-to-analog converter boxes. For more information on the Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Assistance Program click on NTIA's frequently asked questions.

During the period from January 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, a household can request no more than two coupons, each valued at $40. Well as the one guy mentioned, the date is February 18, 2009. Here is what you will need to do to get your TV to work. On the morning of February 18, walk directly to the television set and press the power button, or alternatively, find the remote control and press the power button. Congratulations, you have successfully survived the analog to digital crossover which ONLY affects people getting over the air signals, if you have cable, this change will NOT affect you in ANY way.

To further explain, they are changing over the air signals from analog to digital. This is NOT an HD changeover, despite the fact that a lot of people seem to think it is. There is no hard date set for when all broadcasts have to be HD, and there most likely never will be. You have nothing to worry about.

Your TV would have to be HD compatible or full HD in order to see the HD picture, your plain old TV is not capable of using HD signals.HD compatible would require a HD top box to receive the signal and then put it in the TV. Full HD would have a HD tuner built in and you could receive HD, however with the use of the built in tuner you may not get the channels you would get using the cables HD box, or order ppv or other problems might arise. You might check with you local cable company to see what you can do to convert the HD signal to analog signal, however you would not see HD.

Don't worry, your TV will work just fine.
You can get a set-top box from either your cable or satellite company. You should be also cable to buy a converter for off-the-air reception for less than $100.
