I haven't seen my father since I was 8. He stopped calling when I was 14. I'm 19 now.

He called today and asked me to meet him. I don't know if I should.

I know that mom never discouraged him to meet or to call me. She said that she would be glad if I met him and talked to him...

Yes. There really is no reason not to, or else youll regret not meeting your father the rest of your life. Youre not responsible for what happened years ago, so you dont have to be on the offensive here. Nor did you do anything wrong either. Dont put him in the hot seat either, just have a nice father-daughter dinner. Hear him out, it could be very interesting. You are not your mother so form your own relationship with your dad if you should so desire. Good luck

Without knowing the circumstances, it is hard to give advice, but I would meet him in a public place and listen to what he has to say. Many times it turns out that the dad was discouraged from calling by the mom ---or he was in a place where he could not call.

If you don't like what you hear, you can always tell him that you don't want to see him again.

my dad and i lost touch when i was 8 as well, i was the one who did some detective work and tracked him down when i was 16, i've never regretted it. sometimes as in my case, the mother or mothers family makes it very hard for the father to stay in touch, i was always moved around, just have coffee with the guy. you don't have to instantly run into his arms or anything sappy like that, but talking might help.

I agree with your mother. What will it hurt for you to meet with him? You can ask him all the question nobody can answer but him. Go with your gut feeling. What will make you happy or be a peace with what decision you make?

I have never been in your type of relationship but what would talking to him hurt.
Once someone is gone you can never go back and say anything to them. I am not saying this is your failing ~ but if you were not even curious you would not have typed this question.
So maybe you answered it yourself !?! Good luck

Meet him someplace neutral...like Starbucks for coffee.

I would keep my guard up and e very cautious because you really don't know this man...he's a stranger to you.

It depends on how comfortable you are meeting him. Take a chance. You have nothing to lose.
