"And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." KJV
"And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." NASB
Mark 10:18
Why does the bible contradict Christianity? I thought Christianity was supposed to be based on the bible, and that Christianity states that Jesus was God, and yet... Mark 10:18 states that he wasn't. Interestingly enough this passage goes on to say that the way into heaven is to obey the commandments of the old testament, not to accept him as their personal whatever...
" 17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. 19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone... NLT

Well then Chef Bob: Why did he go on to say he wasn't god in Mark 10:18... Sounds like a real flip-flopper to me.

It was pretty much a test to the man. He passed. Jesus made many such tests to various people, including his apostles. Interestingly enough, even though they were given more answers, the apostles ended up being the most clueless about anything Jesus said.
But, yeah this part of the Bible confused me too. However, like many parts of the holy scriptures, the answer is always easier than it seems.

The man already recognized that Jesus is the begotten Son of God, and showed his believe by kneeling before Him. Jesus was simply saying that He already believes, now he need only go out at live according to the commandments that God the Father has given us. In Mark, Jesus was not saying that He is not the Son of God, He was saying that God the Father is the one who is good...God the father is our creator. Jesus walked the earth as "flesh".

Jesus came under the law. Lived under the law. Died under the law. And rose again under the law. He came to the Jews, who were the keepers of the law.
Read the gospels in that light, they make much more sense. Then keep reading through Romans. And Christianity will make more sense.
Also, read John 10:33, ""We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." Jesus CLEARLY claimed to be God. Also see John 1, Col 1, Heb 1, Rev 1,4,5.
Jesus did claim to be God. Now, what do you think. Was He a liar? A lunatic? Or the Lord?

Jesus only said he wasn't good. Goodness must be a powerful attribute that only God the Father has. Jesus did equate himself with God except for being good. He said the one who sent him is greater than he.

Read what comes before the part you quoted!!!
The man called him "Good Teacher" in verse 17. He did not believe that Jesus was God...he just thought he was a good teacher. A good teacher is not good enough to attain perfect salvation no matter what laws he keeps.

Not all Christians believe Jesus is God. Jesus is Gods son and from the scriptures you've quoted here you can see that is the truth. Jesus also said "...the father is greater than I..." Jehovah is God, the creator, ...Jesus is the son of god, his first creation and the holy spirit is the power that God uses to accomplish his purpose. they work as a team.

You need to read the entire chapter, just not the verses you wrote. You write down half a statement, from a paraphrase translation, and try to make conclusions. Throw your NLT away, get a real Bible, and read the whole conversation.

GOD Laws are made of three Books: The Old Testament, The new Testament and Quran as a conclusion all originated from the middle east. How can you understand GOD LAWS with out reading GOD Conclusion?
Jesus rebuked those who called him Lord. ON HIS OWN IDENTITY Jesus' statements throughout the Bible suggest that any idea of exalting him to divinity was unthinkable. In Matthew's gospel, Jesus denounces in the strongest terms those who exalt him by calling him `Lord': "None of those who cry out, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes, many will plead with me, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? Have we not exorcised demons by its power? Did we not do many miracles in your name as well?' Then I will declare to them solemnly, `I never knew you. Out of my sight, you evil doers!' " [Matthew 7:21-23] .... Adapted from this Christian site http://www.free-minds.org/jesus1.htm

Please dont confuse being Good with divine.
jesus claimed not to be the FATHER and had life separately in himself and therefore God is the better Good and in him is no darkness.
Jesus did claim to be the son of God, even though isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be called God almighty only because it is true that many people beilieve this to this day.
Jesus was the Son, he was our saviour, and he was part of the godhead, but he is not the Same Person as his own FAther and God that we all worship.
