Short term the best non- chemical way is to use a sock filled half-way with rice. Tie the end and micro wave for 1.5 minutes. (Never go over two - These get hot enough to burn) Then use the moist warm heat on your head where it hurts while you rest quietly in a darkened room.

Some people prefer cold - so you could also try an ice pack.

Of course tylenol, or ibuprofin according to the package will help, usually.

A cup of coffee or tea that has caffiene will usuallu also help. The active ingredients in many headache meds like excedrin have caffiene in them.

If you have many headaches (several a week) or severe head aches, please see your doctor. It's important to know what kind of head ache you are having and what is causing it.

Having Mis-aligned jaws can give severe tension headaches.

Migraines have certain things that will trigger them and you should be evaluated by a doc for them. (If you have trouble seeing before hand, feel nausea, sensitivity to light or noise and pain in one specific location in your head - it's probably a migraine.)

Sinus and allergy problems are often a culprit. It may be a sign of a sinus infection.

Stress is a common culprit.

Short term try something over the counter and a heat pack

Long term, if it is frequent then see your doc!
Best of wishes.

please be careful on how much over-the-counter meds u take. i have taken alot over the past three years and they have caused me alot more prolems. if the headaches are around the eyes or forehead they are usually sinus headches. the temple, a band like feeling is usually tension headaches and trust me if it where a migraine u would know the difference. sometimes a headaches can be severe in the back of the neck and up the lower part of the head that leads to migraines alot. this can be caused by low serratonin levels. sinus headaches are helped by tylenol severe allergy, etc. tension headaches can be helped by most over the counter- tylenol is the safest in the long term use-if it is in the neck or lower back part of your skull-see a neurologist- a chiropractor can help lots of times- once u start getting adjusted u pretty much always will

i have 'severe' headaches from injury- in fact was bedridden for 3 1/2 years due to the head/nerve pain.
for me over the counter excedrine migraine does the trick // 2or3 at beginning of headache. i will then lay down with ice packs on head to sleep for 20 min to half hour or 45min and it usually disappears completely.

By the way, my neck/head pain injury was caused by a chiropractor who misjudged his adjustment- i will never recommend a chiro as one mistake can change your life forever- it did mine. Most all of my dreams and goals were changed as I could no longer function as a normal person.

Wal Mart sells a one use pack in the pharmacy section. You just squeeze it and it becomes ice cold. you put it on your head and try to go to sleep, first take Excedrin and a coke. This should knock it right out.
