a book about it that was written by a fellow named Billy Joe Bob Yokum. Now this fellow is from the deep south and had some really great ideas about who had won the war and I kinda went along with what he said about the south actually winning and all, but then some of my friends told me that I should read more books about the subject in order to get a true perspective about what really happened. Well it had never occured to me to do that since old Billy Joe Bob and I are both from the South and have a tendency to think along the same lines, but I went along with their suggestion and lo and behold I found that the north had actually won that war and that old Billy Joe Bob Yokum was basing his conclusions on what he wanted them to be instead of what had actually happened.

This year I want to learn about Christianity but don't know where to start, so would you all suggest that I read just the bible, or should I read other things also in order to get at the truth?

Great that you are thinking. Sure, read the bible, but you should also read opposing views. Try letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris. It's short, sweet, and a easy read, and it gives all the opposing views of Christianity. With the bible and Christian Nation, you should have no problems.

My sisters husband wrote a book a long time before they married on the civil war, it is a very well written book and sounds right to me, as you know in this world, facts from 1865, in the south especially, after that war and destruction from it is hard to piece together.

Christianity:

From Acts 11:26; I took this to mean some one that knew all the books of the bible and every ounce of fact possible as truth seemed to be the focus of Jesus and the apostles.
John 8:32; 17:17;
Sanctified in truth sounds serious to me.

I do not believe this describes religions, most are from the source where a man has said, it is said.
I do not want any part of that, so I have been a serious bible student for years. I do
believe it all, it has the worst of the worst as I have been a witness to in my life, it has all the promises of what we do not have here.

If you hear what the majority says, we are about the same as a rat. There is no truth any where.
We are not food. That tells us something.
I trust God and Christ.
I love the prophecy and when you figure the time, it is right on time. I have no taboo about time. The world with Satan will end in time Rev.20:1-6,12,13 [ No Satan ];

Eph.2:7; 3:21; The world with Jesus is without end. John 3:16;

Being open minded and examining what you read and backing it up with other writings is a very good way to learn the truth. It reminds me of the Beroeans.........
 Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so...Acts 17:11
They didn't just realy on what others or just what the scriptures said, they carefully examined everything.

to get the true Word of the Bible...you should read just the Bible at first then add to it more learned scholars on the Bible...but you must remember mans written interpretation is always part of his opinion...the full truth is in the Bible the rest is just mixed messages...take them with a grain of salt.....The Bible needs to be read over and over to get the most out of it...every time I read it I see something that I missed the first time or the second...you get my point I'm sure...and always add prayer to this to get the full benefit of the Holy Spirits leading and direction for finding the truth.....happy reading and may you discover the truth

Read the bible certainly, and any other holy book you can get your hands on (Koran, Bagvadita (may not be spelt correctly)), then have a think about it. Then read some science books, and have a think about those. Then ask lots of questions.

Christianity as we know it today was defined after the bible was written. If you want to know about current day Christianity, dont look to the bible.
You have two subjects here: Life of Christ, and "Christianity" as a set of religions. Don't confuse the two.

Start out with the Bible itself. And bear in mind that "All scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching..." (2 Timothy 3:14) Don't let anyone give you one verse and tell you it proves their point.

Points to look for as you read:

Inner harmony of the entire Bible even though the writing of it is spread out by hundreds of years
Truthfulness of the writers in revealing even their own shortfalls, unlike secular historians.
Fulfilled prophecy; prophecies that are being fulfilled in our day (Matt 24; 1 Tim. 3:1-5)

I also recommend you pray to God for help in understanding his word and that he help you find the truth you seek.

I wish you all the best in your search.
