Hi, I just ordered some haddock or cod (I don't know what it is -- the menu said "scrod" but I know that scrod simply means either haddock or cod since scrod isn't an acutal fish). Anyway, it has lots of skinny, squiggley little brown things in it -- are those worms or veins? And no, I'm not kidding so I'd appreciate serious answers please. Thanks so much! I'm afraid to eat it!

**EDIT** I didn't mean "squiggley" as in still moving, I just used squiggley to describe the shapes of them. I don't know if that makes a difference. Also, I ate a few bites of it, just assuming that it was normal. Will that hurt me?

Oh my god that's absolutely disgusting! Are you sure that it won't hurt me? I did have a few bites of it before I noticed the brown things. (It's almost like they looks like little brown cotton fibers or something.) I'm not sure if it was fully cooked ... I mean, it was flakey, so I assume that it was, but I'm not sure!!! GROSS! What would happen if they weren't fully cooked? What type of parasite is it? How is it treated? This is so disgusting I feel like I'm going to vomit. PLEASE HELP! Thank you so much for all the info so far!

It is gross and should not have made it to the vendor. All though these worms are not harmfull to humans you shouldn't eat the fish. haddock and cod are a cold water fish and seldom pick up these parasites in cold waters. However ,when caught in the summer, they often do have a lot of worms in their flesh. Sorry to gross you out more but it's true, I fish for them and have seen some so infested you wouldn't believe it.
Hey, calm down, it's harmless to humans and i doubt what you saw were the worms anyway. No veins in cod you can see. All white meat.

Scrod is a misleading term originally used for small cod. However some restaurants and retailers use it to cover a host of whitish fish. The skinny squiggle little things are almost certainly worms which will not actually hurt you if the fish was fully cooked. However, since this appears to be a restaurant order send it back for another entree since it is not up to snuff.

I don't know what to say about this fish you got but I can say this much. Both haddock and cod are supposed to be very white meat. I do not know how your fish was cooked but, You should call the restaurant to get some information.

purely FYI, clean fish does not scent fishy. It does not scent in any respect. additionally, clean fish have sparkling eyes, fantastically patterned pores and skin and tight scales. additionally, all fish have bones, your butcher or whoever preps the fish on the marketplace is in charge for deboning your fish. I continuously run my palms alongside the filets and use a small pair of pliers to do away with and final bones. this is somewhat no massive deal. Salmon and massive sea fish have better bones, of course, so as that they are much less stressful to bone than small fish, that have loads of tiny bones. this is virtually impossible to fullyyt debone a small fish without tearing it aside. Shellfish have not have been given any bones, purely cartiledge slivers which additionally would desire to be bumped off. good success.
