What do I need to know in order to become a bartender?

you need a good memory, and be a hard worker. start applying as a barback and pay attention to the bartender you work for. the experience will help you to move up the ladder. i started as a barback 6 years ago and now i am the barmanager....
p.s. don't even think about bartending-school, those are the biggest rip-offs.

Depends on where you want to bartend. The problem with the food industry is you sort of need to work your way up, you need experience to get a job. I started bartending after being hired as a hostess and moving up to a server. They ran short of bartenders and trained me. Bartending school can be a help but there are a lot of really bad programs so generally, restaurants hire tenders with experience or within the company.

I'd recommend going to bartending school, getting your TAM Certification (Tobacco & Alcohol Management), and having a "Bartender's Bible" (book of tips and drink recipes) with you when you work.

How to make a couple hundred cocktail, how to properly pour beer, a little about fine wines, allot of product knowledge, how to handle drunken idiots, how to count, how to measure, how to multi-task, allot about yourself, what POS means, cutting garnish wedges, wheels, twists, shavings and how to have fun doing all of it at once.
Allot to do for $6.75 and hour isn't it?
