The alien registration or "A" number is an 8 or 9 digit number beginning with the letter "A" that is assigned to every person who is an immigrant. People who are born US citizens and people who are in non-immigrant visa categories do not have A numbers. The A number appears, sometimes listed as CIS Registration Number, on the green card, naturalization certificate, and official documents from USCIS regarding an immigrant visa.

E.g., A 55-555-555 or A 055-555-555
