He's blind, nearly deaf, and spends ALL his waking time sniffing out food ie the garbage, the cat's food and will risk life and limb to simple lick an empty bowl. He always had plenty of food, but he acts like he's starving to death. He's 14+ years old and could easily break a bone jumping up on a counter.

Perhaps he is bored. sometimes we forget even old dogs need exercise and mental stimulation, too.

Please have the old geezer checked out by the vet.

Scrounging around for food like he's starving. Risking life and limb for a lick of a bowl? This is a very alive dog. He may have worms or some other medical problem that makes him feel like he's hungry all of the time. It is not normal dog behavior.

He may need to be put on a special low calorie food so that he can eat more but not get fat. I feel sorry for the old fella. I hate to feel hungry, don't you?

He's old but that doesn't mean he's lost his greediness! My dog was still stealing food when he was fifteen.

I do think you should have him checked out at the vets to ensure there isn't a thyroid problem to account for his greed but he probably is just engaging in typical doggy behaviour. When he jumps up, tell him 'no' and discipline him just as you would were he younger. I'd also try and lock him out of the kitchen (perhaps borrow a baby gate from someone) so he's not snooping around, jumping on counters.

Does he have a thyroid problem? It can often cause them to feel like they are starving to death even when they get plenty to eat. your vet can check this with bloodwork.

you should do him a favor and have him put down. its not fair to him, he has given you 14 years. if hes blind and nearly deaf, his wanting to eat everything is the least of your problems.

Gosh, I don't know what to say?
If he means lots to you, then help him, make him comfortable.. get him a crate, with a nice blanket, help him in all the ways you can- if he has lost his ability to let you know he needs to go out, or if he is indeed hurting himself, then you must make a decision.
good luck.

Sooo, why don't you do the humane thing and send him over the rainbow ?

It's mean to let an animal suffer.
