I’m an 18 year old girl in my senior year of high school and have a question about bowel movements. This school year I have been very busy with extra-curricular activities and have gotten into the habit of holding it in, so to speak. I used to have 1 to 2 bm’s per day and now I usually do one every 3 or 4 days. I like the idea of going less frequently. I also like the fact that I can do an adult-sized bm: usually one or two long stools that are solid (many times sort of knobbly-textured) and thick, as compared with previous smaller and softer stools. I do have to push more during a bm, but not to an extreme. So, two questions: Is it healthy to do a bowel movement less frequently than usual, and also have other people done the same by fighting the urge and putting-off having a bm for an extended period of time?

Please don't do that!!! I was like you, I thought it was quite practical too, until this situation caused hemorrhoids (piles) to me. Holding it in is unhealthy in general, toxines develop and absorb into your body, but the worst is hemorrhoids: straining puts pressure on them, and one day they will start protruding, and you will have a horrible pain, and they may not be able to go back in and you may need surgery etc. Trust me, this situation was the worst thing that ever happened to me, it's scary and awful. Please eat prunes and figs and veg and try to go to the loo every day!

"Holding it in" is a VERY BAD idea. Ideally, food should pass from your mouth through the large intestine and out of the body within 12-15 hours of consumption. (For the average American the transit time is more like 24-72 hours, hence the multi-billion dollar laxative and cancer industry.). The longer the food stays in the system, the longer it putrefies, allowing a toxic build-up, affecting the entire body. There have been discovered, to this date, 36 carcinogenic (cancer causing) substances that can be created within the intestines resulting from poor diet and elimination, parasites, yeast imbalances, heavy metals, environmental toxins, internally produced toxins.

Your previous elimination habits were excellent. Be SMART and get back to them NOW or you will possibly pay a very heavy price at a later date.

One or two semi-soft stools a day is best. What you're doing puts you at risk of hemorrhoids, which isn't serious but is very painful. Besides, having a BM feels good and gives you a little break to relax.

Putting off defecating is not a good idea. It is not good to have feces putrefying insides your body for longer than necessary. It souinds like you are a bit dehydrated because your poop is harder. Water is best. Walking will help you poop more readily also.
On a lighter note... I guess we can say you are full of sh**.
