I have a three month old mini dachshund. I want to feed him dog food that is very good for him and will provide all the nutrients he needs but that is also affordable. So far I've been feeding him Iams and Puppy Chow. I've heard conflicting things about all brands of dog food. Suggestions?

I only feed my dog nutro.... it is more expensive, but my dog eats way less because it's a high quality dog food and they get the nutrients that they need from a smaller amount of food.... PLUS there's less to pick up in the yard, which is always a good thing in my book!

Nutro has added soy bean oil recently which has made it start to cause some allergic reactions in dogs lately. Like others said-if you can buy it in walmart or the grocery store, its NO good. Go for food without corn-corn is the biggest filler they use. Some of the best foods you can buy is Innova, Canidae, Eagle Pack, or Pinnacle. If you're not looking to spend that much, I would say Nature's Recipe is decent. It's not quite as expensive as Nutro, either, and has very good ingredients.

After doing quite some research, Canidae is the best bargain. In terms of best quality and variety, Wellness wins my vote. They offer a great range of food, treats, and supplements. Others to consider, Newman's Own, Innova, and Nature's Variety. 80%-90% of the ingredients are recognizable. Your dog's health will benefit in the long term, and not forgetting to mention lesser waste.

Nutro: Worked and did demos in Petco, even proved to me that best dog and cat food you can buy. Look at first ingredient if its corn not the best. Corn is only a filler and serves no purpose. Nutro has pet food designed for Puppy all the way to Senior. Customers came back to thank me for turning them on to Nutro. I know around my neighborhood the Vets suggest Science diet cause they get paid to use it for the clients. Don't use it.

I have an Outward Hound backpack, had if for like 9 years.. some minor repairs have been done (on the stitching) but my German Shepherd used to wear it while hiking in the woods and it was normal wear & tear. My favorite thing is that the actual pack can be removed from the harness part (Velcro & a snap) , so it's easy to remove if your dog wants to go in the river/lake... I liked the pack so much that I bought my old gal an Outward Hound life jacket (she loves to swim). I suggest outward hound & the price is reasonable. both backpack & life jacket have adjustable straps to make a perfect fit. & be sure to measure your dog for the right size

dog foods work different for each dog. my lab has been on the everything from purina to innova. my favorite has been nutro. you want a dog food thats low on grains like wheat and corn b/c they usualy cause allergies and for that same reason stay away from beef. also never ever use a food that contains by-products, that is the bones, eyes, intestines, feet, hooves, and beaks of whatever animal it contains.

The way to tell a good quality food is to look at the ingredients and to remember that dogs are meat eaters & designed to extract nutrition from meat protein not grains/veggies.
Stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products, dyes and chemical preservatives.
Some good foods to consider:
Wellness, Innova, Percise, Premium Edge, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Solid Gold just to name a few.

Stay away from IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Pedigree, Alpo and other supermarket foods.

A good quality cheap food is at Costco. Has a better ingridient list than any food of its price.

The ingridients are listed here:

We have always fed Eukanuba/Iams and the dog do GREAT on it. Have tried things like Wellness, Innova, Nutro....did get the same results. If what you are feeding is doing well for your dog...keep at it. Don't let other make you feel bad about it. If you think the dog could do better on something else....give it a try.

Austria?? Argentina?? Australia??

ok Puppy CHow is crap - too much filler
Iams is CRAP plus is more costly - also too much filler (Iams used to be good til Proctor and Gamble bought it out and dumbed it down - plus linked to cruel testing)

ok good foods are NEVER sold in grocery or Wal Mart
if you see a lot of commercials for a food - its crap - they are spending money on commercials NOT ingredients

also Science Diet is OVER PRICED CRAP - they paid for vet endorsement - crappy filler ingredients though... read the lable - by-products are beaks feet and feathers you are paying WAY too much for junk if you buy this food...

go to a pet supply store and read the lables...

in Canada - ACANA.. in USA although not a top food, Nutro Natural Choice...
the better foods may cost more but your dog wont need to eat as much so in the long run they are cheaper.. less poop too...

best cheap food is Pedigree
