i dunno captain star trek, maybe because its the standard! just like "a" always comes before "b" in the alphabet... like that u dont have to guess everytine u use a new faucet, or read the little H or C on top which is usually missing, and then the hot starts cold always, so u think, hey this is cold water, let it run for a minute while u brush ur teeth, then go in for a mouthe full and cook ur gums!

that way people always know its on the right and wont burn themselves the next time they use a sink by turning the wrong faucet
