Well for close air support you'd want the A-10. The F-18 is a good plane, but it can't take the abuse the A10 can. The A-10 can stay on station for a longer time and can carry 16 tons of bombs. Let's not forget the 30mm gun on it.
The Marines don't have because their under control of the Navy. What would you take A-10's or ships.

A-10 thunderbolt 2 aka warthog. The A-10 has a longer TOT(time on target) carries more munitions than a the FA-18 hornet. It's not as sexy or as fast but it will obliterate the piss out of any target.

I think to find the answer we have to go back to when the A-10 came in to service. The Air Force really didn't want it but the Army basically said either you field it and fly it or we will. The AF has tried to get rid of the A-10 for many years now but it continues to prove its worth to us ground pounders.
The flyers don't want it because it is not fast and sexy. It doesn't dominate the air the way some of the F series jest do. To a pilot flying the A-10 is just a step up from flying a C-130. I don't mean to desrespect my AF brothers in arms but that is just the way it is seen from those of us on the ground.

I would have to go with the warthog. That 30 mil. gun can really do some damage and it can also carry a wide variety of bombs. Also , I have seen them shot up so bad that you wouldn't think it could fly, but it got the pilot safe back home.

well, from both sides, if you are looking for good firepower and durability, ill say the a-10, if you are looking for fast moving, target precision and also good firepower, ill say the f-18, but the f-18 is more of a multirole aircraft compared to the a-10 which is designed for close air support only. why the marines don't have a-10's, i don't know, but it would be a bad *** plane to have in the marines arsenal.

Although the A-10 is better for close air support, it is impractical for the marines to operate with it. This is because most marines deploy from carriers (which A-10 can't operate on) or from LHDs (big marine ships that are small carriers) That can't even operate F/A-18s. Marines rely on other services for their air support just as other services rely on marines for their base/ weapon (read: WMD) security.

this is dependent on several factors , Such as terrain, weather, day or night ops. and so on... of the two I would put my money (and my life) on the one w/ the BIGGEST BOOT to be do-in all of this Butt kickin, The F-18 wins It's got more more and more , Speed, firepower, range, etc The second answer is simple The U.S.Navy does not fly them. So with the USMC being part of my Uncle Sams Navy those Darn Leathernecks don't get to fly the USAF's aircraft (maybe there is a cross trng program of sorts among them)

A-10, IMHO. But I'm a bit biased.
The Marines called us in when they needed us. And we returned the favor many times.
When your position is being overrun, a Jarhead's face is a thing of great beauty and wonder. Thanks Marines! I owe you several!

A-10. It can carry more ordnance, take more punishment due to its redundancy systems, has a longer loitering time & can kill armour with its 30mm gun.
