I have curly hair but sometimes I want to increase and make the curls more defined. You are a guy so I dont know how long your hair is, but what I do with mine is put styling product in it to smooth it (nothing that would be crunchy! yuck) take small sections of hair twist them, and pin them to my head until dry (or blowdry). Its pretty 1940's I know, but it works wonders and if your hair is already wavy it will set nicely. also it assures that your hair doesnt poof out until you get to work/school/dinner. Not as dangerous or cumbersome as a curling iron and not damaging or perminate as a perm

Humidity, drying time, and the right shampoos and mouse/gel determine whether its curly or wavey. Spiral curls need higher moisturizer in the shampoo and conditioner (PanteenPro-V for curly hair works the best for me), followed by a medium-light gel or mouse (curl defining mouse is my preference... brands make a difference! try a couple, depending on water pH and hardness, I have to change brands depending on where I'm located). After adding hair product, scrunch the hair with your hands, add a little more water, and then let it dry very slowly, relatively undisturbed for the next 3 hours. And "eh-voila!", lots of well defined curls.
Oh, check the pH of the water... if its alkaline, curly hair often doesn't like it.

you can try scrunching it up when it's wet with some sort of curl holding product. If you've got some natural body you may be able to get more this way.
Other then that, you'll have to go with a perm, or iron. Not other alternatives.

my hair is wavy, to get my hair to curl( like little ringlets or what ever) put hair gel all over your hair really rub it in, then this is gonna sound stupid but it works, put your head forward, chin to the chest, now you should be looking at the ground, then shake your head like your saying no to a person while your doing this take your fingers and poke with all 8 of them for about 3 to 4 seconds, you hair should have broke into single strands of hair then give you head a little shake again while your are looking at your self in the mirror lol then the waviness of you hair should do the rest, it should look like full circles, but their is new gel on the market now, that will make your hair curly, defriz, straighten it

I also have wavy hair, and if i wont it to be really curly i scrunch it to my scalp with my hands and hold it tight there for about 5 secounds and reapet the process all over then give it another once over. I also use serum and a little bit of conditioner and mix it with my gel when i scrunch. Hope this helps .

if your hair is long enuf you can wrap small, damp sections of hair around a pencil or other small, tubular utensil up to the scalp, pull the pencil out and then put a bobby pin on each end of the curly hair tube. do this all over your head. sleep on it like this. you can use a hairnet or showercap to keep everything in place. in the morn take out the bobby pins and you'll have the curliest hair you've ever had.

uSe hot or cold rollers, they have different sizes to give you a variety of effects, also use hairspray after using the rollers to lock in the look.
