First off, you must not let your kids play in the street! As for the speeders, I've seen people put out signs and cones saying SLOW CHILDREN AT PLAY. You can also buy your own speed gun on Ebay.com or even a ex copcar to set out front :)

As someone else said, unless it's a serious accident blackspot (by which time it's too late), not much chance.
Part of the reason for this is the negative publicity speed camera's have got from drivers pressure groups, and the media. They are often portrayed as money making devices for councils and the police.
To some extent, this may be true, as some have been sited in places where they are not needed, but I think that more should be sited in urban areas (30 mph), as the risk to pedestrians here is increased.
You could try to gain evidence of speeding, perhaps by measuring speed of cars by timing them over a fixed distance and calculating the speed (speed=distance divided by time). If you could show a significant proportion of cars were speeding, it could strengthen your case when you present it to the local council.
Other than that, you need to get together with other residents, and start your own pressure group, and lobby your MP and local councillors.
I hope thing work out for you.

I used to have this problem where i used to stay.
we were just at the start of the 30 mile limti but everyone would fly thru the village at all sorts of speeds.
Sit in your car with the headlights on back form the raod and wait till you see all of them hitting the brakes, or take the flash for a camera hide youself and talke a picture everytime one goes by, they will think they have been caught on a speed camera!
As for getting a real one write to the cheif of police for your area explaining your concerns, they may be able to help, but usually you can only get one if people have been killed on that spot of the road, which is maddness as a speed camera could have stopped them getting killed in the first place!

I assume you let your 4 children play on the road. Roads are for cars - tackle the speed levels but don't use your children as an excuse. I lived on a major road artery i.e only access for ambulances, police and military emergency vehicles as well as busy bus and car route. I taught my children - roads are for cars and are very dangerous places-play in your own garden or the park. Do not play near road - think about innocent car driver faced with numerous hazards and then a child steps into road - nightmare! Tackle the stupid boy racers but don't tar everyone with the same brush!!

Just so you know.
the law states that there must have been a certain amount of accidents on the road in question or that it is near a school.
So unless it is an accident black spot or near a school (very near) then it will be hard.
You would be better pushing your local MP for a speed bump on the road, that would make them slow down a little.

Get a petition signed for speed bumps, much more effective than a speed camera, and take it to the local council

using a camera will do no good and calling the police with their plate numbers will do no good(police wil tell you they have to see them). call the police and ask for a patrol car to temporary monitor the street or maybe even leave an unused car in your driveway if possible(this will make them think a cop lives there if left long enough) or get a petition for speed bumps if not a major route to deter this(contact your city engineering dept. for info as to how to do this properly )

contact your local police dept and see if they won't put one of them nice big electric speed limit signs in your front yard so the kids can see how fast they are going. Just call the police. Get a video cam and record them speeding. Make sure you get a shot of the license plate and turn it all over to the police. Let them do their job..

When you go to a city council meeting ,bring your kids with and if they say it's because of the budget maybe you could raise the money from a street racing competition
