We have noticed that new DVD's pause frequently (although very briefly; 1 second maybe) in the middle of movies. Is this supposed to happen? We thought that perhaps there was a special coating that causes this so that people cannot copy them. Or, is something wrong with our player?

If it pauses for a split second, it's a dual layer disc. What this means is it can hold 8.5GB of data as opposed to single layer discs, which hold 4.7GB of data. Once the first layer data is completely read, it switches to the second layer, which would start where the pause is.
