Definitely human charities every time! I don't know where in the world you are but in England animal charities get double the donations per year than the leading children's charity does! That makes me really angry.Don't get me wrong, I think any kind of cruelty to animals is unacceptable, but given the choice,my money is going to the kids, not puppies and kittens!

This comparison is set up falsely. You can't compare apples and oranges.
You are implying that people who own pets are being selfish and ignoring those in need, like orphans and the starving.
There's nothing wrong with people taking care of themselves first and foremost, and if a pet makes them happy, then they should feel good about that and treat their pet well.
If you make the personal choice that giving to charity better meets your values, then go for it. You should not criticize pet owners, though, for making themselves happy.
Life is too rough these days. We all deserve to find happiness.

Pets are good for people psychologically it helps us to feel for others, its called EMPATHY and I thnk it helps us to share with others, most people who own pets DO give to charities, and put money in the kettle at xmas time and put a coupe extra $$ in the tithe.... those who cannot give money give of their time and hearts to help others.....I have found in my time walking this earth that.pet people are more selfless than those who do not own any pets. also animals give back too there are a million different types of service dogs that lead the blind, can tell when their masters are about to have a seizure, animals visit the old and the ill, http://www.caninecompanions.org/national/psa.html
and dogs rescue people in trouble and of course locate dead bodies ala 911, most of thse bodies and parts would NEVER have been found without the help of those fine dogs

I have a pet and donate toward PetSmart and other things for animals. I like animals more than I like people. I would donate for the disabled though (mainly because I am disabled). The monthly charity would be a no-go though. My only income is SSI.

Why make a choice? You can have both. I have a wonderful cat who doesn't cost that much to feed and maintain, and I give most generously to church and other charities. I am not a wealthy person. Hopefully, one doesn't ever have to make a choice, since it is possible to give to worthy charities and provide a loving and companionable home for a cherished pet.

Having a pet and giving a small monthly charity. Better yet, your small monthly charity could be a donation of a pet.

For me, a pet is more important. My pets comfort me and keep me from feeling lonely. That's something a generic "thank you" card from a charity can't do.
