I would like to dual install BeatrIX Linux next to XP, which currently occupies the entire hard disk. I have the Ultimate Boot CD which might help.

You need to resize the NTFS partition using a free program like FIPS. Back your sensitive data up first. I've only done it on an NTFS once, but it worked fine. Also, make sure you defrag the hard drive first.

Hey Dude,

Spend the $50 for Symantec's Partition magic and be done with it. Yes, there are bunch of other programs out there, but you need to know what you are doing. If you do not want to "lose data" buy this brain dead program. :)

Acronis has a good program too that is cheap.

you can ... ive done it ... but it can cause problems with the operating system already on the disk ...i'd say you have a 50/50 chance of no problems and thats from experience ... use acronis or partition magic .. i would backup the entire disk with somthing like nortons ghost so if it doesnt work out you can put it ryt back ...
