my dad is having trouble with a metal sliding glass dooir handle, I read that putting a cloth on it on a dry wintry day like today will only make it worse, causing extremely painful sparks of 21,000 volts!! it has been going on for about 2 days now and he is using the door alot because we are putting a floor down in our house. how can he get rid of the painful shock every time he goes outside to use the saw?? any hints, please help! his hand is bright red from all the shocks and it hurts really bad. thanks!

Tied a rag to the door maybe? Tell him to grab the door by the rag. Please let us know if it works.

I have that happen all the time at work. I started touching something metal with my arm or leg just before I grabbed the door handle just to get rid of the static. It doesn't hurt as much that way. Not as many nerve endings in those areas, I guess.

Tell your dad to ware shoes with thick rubber soles and/or put a rubber mat on the floor in frond of the door.

static electricity is caused the exchange of electrons between 2 objects rubbing together, the release of these electrons causes an electric discharge. he could try using leather gloves, leather is an insulator against static i believe... this would eliminate the shocks.

You can run a humidifier in the room. Increasing the humidity will help.

21000 volts!?!? You would be dead if that was true. Use a cloth and open the door.
