Layer as in drinks with different densities so one sits on top of the other.

Layered shots... I love it. My personal record is seven layers.

The key is to know your drinks. You have to know the specific gravity of each. The higher the sugar content, the more dense it is. Grenadine is a standard bottom layer since it's a thick syrup.

As for technique, depends on what you're using. For the test tube shooters, angel the tube so that's it's almost horizontal to the ground and slowly pour in the alcohol. If using those special pouring nozzles bartenders use, cover the air hole on the back of the nozzle causing the liquid to come out very slowly. Angel the tube vertically as you get closer and close to the top. If using a shot glass, use the back of a spoon to help slow down the speed at which the alcohol enters the glass.

If you know you will be serving layered drinks at a party, make them before hand and chill in the fridge for an hour. The specific gravity will take care of itself and the layering will happen on it's own.

FYI - test tube shooters are only legal if the bottoms are flat and can support themselves.

Cheers

This is done very slowly. Syrups go first and usually alcohol last. When poured slowly they will stay separated. If, I remember correct, we made Mexican Flags in this order in a shot glass; Grenadine 1/3, Green Cream De Menthe (Spelling) Liqueur 1/3, and Tequila 1/3, then top with a small layer of Ever Clear, ignite with a lighter and blow out and down it!

get a butter knife.. pour the alcohol onto the knife and it will slowly drain into the shot glass.. then do the 2nd layer.

This helps because if you pour right out of the bottle, it mixes up.. if it hits the knife first, then rolls down into the shot glass you will get that nice layered look.
Also a maraschino cherry works too.. just hold in the shot glass and pour the alcohol onto it.

Lock up the liquor in jello. That should do the trick.

You could also go the route of using gelatin to make your own jello so the flavors of the jello don't interfere with the liquor.

i use the backside of a spoon and pour the alcohol on the spoon slowly so it doesn't mix.
