Good question, wish I could have figured it out too. I am married to man who also comes from a family riddled with alcoholism and he too loves to drink. It took him getting multiple DWI's and spending his beloved money on court cost and lawyer fees before he realized. I don't really think you can make someone realize anything, they just have to. I have found that talking with my husband about what he could lose in life if he takes his drinking to extremes has had some positive effect on him. Good luck and be careful!

He is RIGHT and you are WRONG. If he drinks, blacks out, loses control and passes out he should not drink at all and should talk to a professional. Alcoholism is a disease that is passed down...an actual gene has been found for it! There is no good limit of alcohol or any addicting drug for a person with a family history of alcoholism or drug abuse. It is a fact that many of us have to learn and live with. I have Alcoholism in both sides of my family although my parents don't drink...or do drugs of any kind. But I have to be aware and make sure my children are aware of the genetic root behind the disease to help prevent any of us becoming addicted. I would hope that your relationship is not based upon his ability to drink, if you want to help him, then help him learn how to enjoy life and parties without the alcohol. It can be done!! Good luck

He's pre-disposed due to family history. The only good limit is 'Zero' none, nada, zip!

As for yor BF's belief, he is correct. There is no such thing as drinking normal for him.

If he does what you say, he is already an alcoholic...the only solution is complete abstinence.
