A friend of mine told me he is 'sorta' wiccan. He has a pantacle around his neck and says it is the same as a pentagram. I realize I am no genius and that I know absolutely nothing about Wicca but aren't these 2 things different. I mean they are similar but they don't even have the same meaning do they? From what I have seen they are really to different beliefs. Can anyone help me with this? I'm am just trying to understand my friend a little more.
Thank You.

You can't be sorta wiccan. Also, don't worry about the differences between pentagrams and pentacles, because if your friend doesn't know the difference, how on earth could it matter to you? It sounds like he just wants to be part of something, without putting in the effort to really understand this. This is something that happens to a lot of people who never felt loved or cared for, and who don't know how to belong to things. Sounds like you need to make sure you aren't also in that group.

"Sorta" Wiccan probably just means he's exploring the path--I'd be concerned if someone just immediately decided he was 100% Wiccan :-) And a pentagram is a pentacle with a circle, so the symbol he's wearing really is both (although they're not exactly the same, they're close enough... it's kind of like saying "aqua" is a kind of "blue"). Why nitpick details?
Along with the "Idiot's Guide" recommendation, above, I also suggest Scott Cunningham's "Truth about Witchcraft Today."

The only difference between a pentacle and a pentagram is the pentacle has the circle around it, which the pentagram does not. To Wiccans, it represents 5 elements: fire, water, air, earth, and spirit. It can also be used to represent the earth element in tarot cards.

The pentacle is just a pentagram with a circle around it. Nothing big and mysterious. Check out witchvox's website. You can learn a LOT there in a way more interesting than anything I could write for you.

"Pentacle" would be the proper spelling, rather than "pantacle." "Penta" means "five," as in five pointed star or five sided figure. "Pentagram" is typically regarded as meaning a five pointed star drawn with five equal lines. "Pentacle" is typically regarded as meaning a pentagram surrounded by a circle. This symbol is commonly worn by Pagans as a symbol of their beliefs.
Wicca is a Pagan religion. One either is or is not Wiccan, there is no "sorta." However, your friend may believe in some, but not all, Wiccan tenets, or practice some, but not all, Wiccan practices. This would not make him Wiccan, but it would make him Pagan.

the pentagram is the star within a circle, it's a sign of protection. The pentacle, I'm not so sure what that is

The Pentagram is almost as old as mankind, and an important symbol in MANY religions. You should try to learn the history, meaning, and importance of the Pentagram, after all the meaning of the Pentagram is as varied as those who wear it.

They are both evil Wicca symbols. God said "Suffer not a witch to live." It is only the wicked law of the land that saves you. You mean a pentacle not a Pantacle. There is no such thing as a Pantacle idiot.

sounds to me like he is just trying this wicca thing out to see if he likes it. A pentagram and the trinity symbol are completely different... if he's a close enough friend may i suggest buying him "The idiots guide to wicca and witchcraft". hopefully he doesn't take the idiot part seriously, its a pretty good book for people who have a lot of misconceptions about wicca.
