It is very useful around the world as most countries have english speaking people and roadsigns. It's often hard to get an order in a fast-food restaurant here in the US.

An advantage: It's wide spread. You're more likely to find someone walking down the street who can speak English than say Polish..?
Disadvantage: The need for everyone to be able to speak english discrimates everybody who cant!

Disadvantage is that English is incredibly difficult to learn from a linguistic standpoint. There are few inherent rules regarding pronunciation for instance.
On the other hand, English has the largest number of terms for items and objects, as well as actions... English purportedly has some ten or more times the number of words describing technology and biology than any of the Latin based languages for instance.

One advantage of knowing English is that it is becoming the BUSINESS LANGUAGE of the world (In Taiwan for example, there are many, many schools that hire Americans to teach English to business people and students. Very lucrative). One big disadvantage is that it is difficult to learn for a non-English speaking person. We have too many words that sound alike/spelled alike but mean different things, or have many meanings depending on the situation (I love ice cream, I love my kids, I love my wife, I love my car, I love travelling).

one advantage is that it is almost universally spoken so that no matter where you go you can usually find someone who speaks it. A disadvantage is that some words are pronounced the same but have different meanings. If you are not a native speaker this can really cause you problems.

English is a widely distributed language originating in England that is currently the primary language of a number of countries. It is extensively used as a second language and as an official language in many other countries. English is the most widely taught and understood language in the world.
And as and Englishman it reminds me of the strength and history of the commonwealth.
