I own a 2004 Dakota right now, and it's a great truck, But I have little question that the Tacoma is far superior. Toyota trucks should not be overlooked, they may not be the best value, but they are solid, and dependable, and offer great features. I really like the composite bed,and tie down system. Not to mention the engines are very powerfull and also efficient. If you have the money, then go for the Tacoma.

Buy a Toyota Tacoma, they are the best selling small pick up truck in the market and they also hold up there value better than any trucks out in the market. They are also highly reliable for long lasting use than any trucks out there. Yes, you might pay a bit more, but remember you get what you pay for. Beside that you might not have any dealers to service your truck if you have any problems.

I have been buying and working on cars since I was 15 yrs old. I can tell you one of the most reliable trucks have been Toyota (with R22 motor) by far. If buying a older Toyota make sure to stay away from the carburated motors.
You will pay a little more but that is because of supply and demand...

From reading car magazines, I would personally suggest the Honda Ridgline, it offers an in bed truck with a spare, the tail gate swings in two separate directions and it tows about 8000lbs. It has about 260 hp (V6), or the Dodge Dakota since it offers a V8 (for sound and durability mostly since most automakers have V6's that are just as strong). The Nissan Frontier is pretty stout lastly the Toyota Tacoma.

If you go used you probably can get a full sized pickup of your choice at a good price if its only going to be a work horse vehicle. (I.E. F150 Titan Tundra or GM brands)
