This morning both of my cooling fans where running when I went to warm the engine, what could be the cause of this?

The car has 102,000 miles on it.

Engine temp. switch that controls fans has failed.Unplug and test with circuit tester.Replace unit if you have continuity. You could have a relay problem on the A/C .

The first step of any diagnosis with a SES light coming on is to scan the codes, write them down, and to inspect the relative information that goes with the code(s) in the data section of the module that is experiencing the problem. There will also be data stored of what was happening when the code was set. This information is very useful in trying to determine what happened. With only the information that is provided here, I suspect you overheated the motor to the point where a sensor detected it or it sent another sensor over a certain limit because of the excess heat. That might or might not be true as some of the programs run in the PCM's turn on the coolant fans when any problem is detected. Sorry I can't be more specific, but more information is needed.

There are literally dozens of possibilities. It is not possible to give you a diagnosis based on your description. You will have to go somewhere and get the code (or codes) read with a scanner. You can waste a lot of time and money making guesses. Good luck.
