A boy goes to the store and buys a bag of apples. On his way home he meets a friend. He gives his friend 1/2 of his apples plus 1/2 an apple. Then he meets a 2nd friend. He gives his 2nd friend 1/2 of the apples he has left plus 1/2 an apple. He meets a 3rd friend. He gives his 3rd friend 1/2 of the apples he has left plus 1/2 an apple. When he finally gets home he opens his bag and all he has left is one whole apple.

The answer is 15 if you take half of 15 you have 7.5 apples left then you give a half that leaves 7 apples. The second friend gets 3.5 apples which is half of 7 then you give another half which leaves you 3 apples. Finally you give the third friend 1.5 apples which is half of 3 then you give one half of an apple which leaves you with one when you get home, and an angry mom if you went to the store to buy apples for a pie. If he gave one friend half of the apples he had plus 1/2 of one apple then how in the hell did he give the second the other 1/2. He'd get less than 1/2 since the first friend had 1/2 his apples plus 1/2 an apple?
